Nurses' Performance for Patient Undergoing Bariatric Surgery

Abstract

Abstract Bariatric surgery is currently considered the most effective treatment option for morbid obesity; it results in greater improvement in weight loss outcomes and obesity-related co-morbidities when compared with nonsurgical interventions. The performance of the bariatric nurse is very relevant for the quality and results of surgery. The aim of this study was to assess nurses̕ performance for patient undergoing bariatric surgery. Design: A descriptive exploratory design was followed to achieve the aim of this study. Setting: The study was conducted at surgical Units at ain Shams University Hospital. Sample: A purposive sample of nurses (30) in surgery unit at ain Shams University Hospital. Tools of data collection: A structured self-Administered knowledge assessment Questionnaire nurses and Evaluation practice checklist. Results: The results of this study showed that, (73.3%) of studied nurses had unsatisfactory knowledge and (70.0%) of them had unsatisfactory practice regarding management of patient undergoing bariatric surgery. Furthermore, there was a statistical significant correlation between total studied nurses’ knowledge and total practice. Conclusion: The current study concluded that, more than two third of the studied nurses had unsatisfactory level of knowledge and practice. Recommendations: The study recommended the importance of implementing an educational training program to improve nurses’ performance regarding management of patient undergoing bariatric surgery.
