Personality Disorders among Substance Abuse Patients

Abstract

Substance abuse is a maladaptive pattern of substance use manifested by recurrent and significant adverse consequences related to repeated use of the substance. Personality disorders are a class of mental disorders characterized by enduring maladaptive patterns of behavior, cognitive and inner experience. Aim of the study: to assess Personality Disorders among substance abuse patients. Setting: At Al Abassia Mental Health Hospital in Cairo, male and female addiction units. Design: Descriptive exploratory design was used. Subjects: A convenience sample of all available patients who were treating from substance abuse in the previous settings (no=80). Tools: An Interviewing Questionnaire to assess the types of personality disorders among substance abuse patients. Results: The highest personality disorders among patients with substance abuse were borderline and antisocial personality disorders followed by narcissistic and histrionic personality disorders. Conclusion: There was significant relationship between the personality disorders and substance abuse, patient who has personality disorder high risk for substance abuse.
