EXPLOITATION OF SOME AGRICULTURAL BY-PRODUCTS AND WASTES FOR VITAMIN B12 PRODUCTION BY BACTERIA

Abstract
Some agricultural by-products and wastes such as whey with
lactic acid, sweet whey, corn meal, potato starchy waste, black strap
cane molasses, high test cane molasses, beet sugar molasses and
corn steep liquor were investigated for production of biomass and
vitamin B12, it was found that high test cane molasses, corn meal and
beet sugar molasses proved to be the best agricultural by-products for
Propionibacterium freudenreichii subsp. freudenreichii CCM1857,
Bacillus isolate (B17) and Azotobacter isolate (A7), respectively, after
being added to the basal medium using flasks as a batch culture. A
low price productive medium composed of high test molasses as a
carbon source, corn steep liquor as a nitrogen sources and a mixture
of elements was suggested for vitamin B12 production by
Propionibacterium freudenreichii grown in flask as a batch culture
showly 145.6 µg B12/ 100 ml in cultures. Used bioreactor 3 litres
vessel equipped Z 6110 / coob (Cole – Parmer Instruments) as a
batch culture for 7 days under controlled environmental conditions
gave 309.15 µg B12 / 100 ml in cultures this amount equivalent to 2.12
times the above production in previous experiments.
