Practice of Nurses Caring for Patients with Accidental Chest Trauma during Emergency Period: Effect of Educational Guidelines

Abstract
Background: The main factor in death globally is trauma. A chest injury of various severities, ranging from a minor rib fracture to a piercing heart injury or tracheobronchial disruption, affects about two thirds of the patients. Aim: Examine the effect of educational recommendations on nurses' level of practise when providing emergency care to patients who have sustained unintentional chest injuries. Design: This study used a pre- and post-test quasi-experimental design on a single group. Setting: The study was carried out in the Tanta University Emergency Hospital's emergency room(ER). Subjects: The Tanta University Emergency Hospital's emergency room served as the study's location (ER).Tools: Two tools were used for data collection. I. Nurses' Self- Administered Questionnaire: Part 1. Nurses' demographics; Part 2's knowledge and attitude levels in treating patients with unintentional chest injuries during the emergency period. II. A checklist used by nurses to assess their level of practise. Results: Before and after the implementation of the educational guidelines, the knowledge, practise, and attitude of nurses were shown to differ in the current study in a highly statistically significant way. Although P > 0.05 indicated that the level of education of nurses and their level of practise and knowledge after the implementation of the educational guidelines were significantly correlated (P 0.001 and 0.004, respectively), although there was no link between nurses' opinions (pre and post) and their degree of education. Conclusion: Throughout all programme phases, the adoption of the instructional guidelines had a favourable impact on nurses' level of practise in providing emergency care for patients with unintentional chest injuries. The research hypothesis is supported by these results. Recommendation: To enhance nurses' practise and deliver top-notch treatment for patients with unintentional chest trauma, regular ongoing educational programmes should be established for nurses working in emergency departments at least every six months.
