Background: Most surgical professionals agree on the importance of good surgical hand-washing practices in infec¬tion prevention. Hand transmission is a critical factor in the spread of bacteria, pathogens, viruses that cause disease and nosocomial infections in general.
Aim: This study aimed to compare between the effects of Surgical Scrubbing with Brush versus Brushless Scrubbing on operating hands staff’s colony forming units. Study design: Quasi-experimental design was utilized to conduct this study. Setting: This study was conducted at operating room in El-Demerdash university Hospital affiliated to Ain Shams University Hospital. Subjects: A selected sample of 60 nurses from the previously mentioned setting was included who divided into two groups (study for brushless & control for using brush). Data collection: data were collected by using hand preparation protocols (with brush versus brushless) by observation checklist with a time method and bacteriological techniques for detecting the types and percentage of bacteria present on scrub nurses hand. Results: There were statistical a significant correlation between performance of scrubbing, gowning, gloving and removal of gloving for two groups (study and control) and reduction in their CFUs count (p<0.05). There was a reversal correlation between scrubbing performance and reduction in microbial count after scrubbing and gloves removal (p<0.01) Conclusion: using a brush during surgical scrubbing is not important in bacterial reduction. Rec¬ommendations: Instruct the surgical team working in operating room with updating guidelines regarding surgical scrubbing technique.
